Three materials cover almost every watch made today, and they fail in completely different ways. Knowing which is in front of the dial tells you more about how a watch will age than almost any other spec.
What is the difference between them?
Acrylic is plastic. Mineral is hardened glass. Sapphire is synthetic corundum — the same crystal structure as the gemstone, grown in a lab. Hardness runs acrylic 3, mineral 5–6, sapphire 9 on the Mohs scale, where diamond is 10.
Which one actually scratches?
Everything scratches sapphire last. Sand is roughly 7 on that scale, which is why mineral glass picks up marks from a beach day and sapphire generally does not. Acrylic scuffs if you look at it wrong.
The trade-off nobody mentions: hardness and brittleness travel together. Sapphire resists scratches and shatters under a sharp impact. Acrylic scratches constantly and almost never cracks — and its scratches polish out in minutes with a tube of plastic polish. Vintage watches survived decades on acrylic for exactly that reason.
Can you tell which one you have?
Two quick tests. Tap it gently with a fingernail — sapphire rings higher and harder than mineral, acrylic sounds dull. Or breathe on it: condensation clears noticeably faster off sapphire because it conducts heat better.
Is sapphire worth paying for?
Under about $150, not always — a mineral crystal on a well-made case usually beats sapphire on a poorly made one. Above that, yes, and it has become the expectation rather than a luxury.

What about the coating?
Anti-reflective coating changes how a crystal behaves more than the material does. Applied underneath, it survives; applied on top, it wears off in patches and looks worse than no coating at all. If a listing says "AR coated" without saying which side, assume the outside.
